Director: Nitesh Tiwari
Writer: Nitesh Tiwari, Piyush Gupta, Shreyas Jain, Nikhil Meharotra

I don’t think there are too many Bollywood sports films that are as memorable as Dangal. Mr. perfectionist “Aamir Khan” has excelled in his role as a former wrestler (Mahavir Singh) who pursues the gold medal he never won by training his two strong-willed daughters named Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari. Set in the Indian state of Haryana, the film is loosely based on the Phogat family and its tryst with the coveted medals at the Commonwealth Games. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na is a comedy love story and one of the best feel-good movies in Bollywood. When the movie was released back in 2008, it became a sensation among teenagers, and it still is one of the best romantic comedies produced by Bollywood.
The story revolves around two friends who don’t believe that they love each other. And to prove others wrong, they promise to find romantic partners for each other. 31. Guru (2006)
IMDb Rating: 7.7/10
Director: Mani Ratnam
Writer: Mani Ratnam, Vijay Krishna Acharya
Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Mithun Chakraborty, R. Madhavan
Guru showcases that Abhishek Bacchan is not as inept an actor as everyone thinks him to be. The movie is loosely based on the life of Dhiru Bhai Ambani — the founder of Reliance. It’s not a biography but takes a lot of inspiration from his life. It showcases the rise of a villager who came to Bombay in 1958 and rose to become the most prominent industry tycoon in the country.
I enjoyed watching this movie tremendously. The script is tight, and the casting is perfect. Abhishek Bachhan kills it as the main character Gurukant Desai, and so does Aishwarya Rai as her wife. Add Mithun Chakraborty, R. Madhavan, Vidya Balan, and more such talented supporting actors, and you get a gripping story performed by masterful actors and actresses.
The final feather in the crown is the music scored by A. R. Rahman and lyrics by Gulzaar. Guru’s music will make you smile, laugh, and cry. It will take you on a journey. It complements the movie and doesn’t take you out of it. If you have not watched Guru before, I highly urge you to watch it.

For folks on the lookout for a scintillating historical action drama film, “Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran” appears to be a fair bet. The film is directed by Abhishek Sharma and features John Abraham, Diana Penty, and Boman Irani in major roles.
If you haven’t already guessed it, let me tell you that it’s based on the nuclear bomb test explosions conducted by the Indian Army at Pokhran in 1998 during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government. In a nutshell, Parmanu is an ode to the incredible bravery of the Indian Army and the resolute scientists.

33. Rang de Basanti (2006)
IMDb Rating: 8.1/10
Director: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
Writer: Rensil D’Silva, Prasoon Joshi, Kamlesh Pandey
Cast: Aamir Khan, Siddharth, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Atul Kulkarni
Rang de Basanti is probably my most favourite Bollywood movie of all time. Not only does the movie have a good story and excellent acting, but it’s also a masterpiece of the craft of movie-making itself. The way this movie cuts between its two main timelines is exquisite. You never feel out of the place, and every sequence fits perfectly.
Talking about the plot, it’s a story of Indian Youth and how they reconnect with their past. The story revolves around six young Indians who assist an English Woman in filming a documentary on the freedom fighters. As they are filming the documentary, they learn about the sacrifices that were made to make this country and the responsibilities that have been placed on us to move this country forward.
The legendary Mr. A. R. Rahman has scored the movie, so you know the music is going to be great. If you love a thought-provoking movie that makes you rethink your life choices, this is the movie for you.

35. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017)
IMDb Rating: 7.3/10
Director: Shree Narayan Singh
Writer: Siddharth Singh
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar
As a satirical comedy, “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha” has lived up to my billing. And rightly so, as the movie is a pretty interesting representation of government campaigns to improve sanitation conditions in India with the sole focus on the elimination of open defecation.
With an impressive cast led by the likes of Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Anupam Kher, and Sudhir Pandey, the film succeeds in highlighting India’s toilet problem with a great mix of love and comedy. So, it deserves a shot in this roundup of the top Bollywood movies on Netflix.

36. Tamasha (2015)
IMDb Rating: 7.4/10
Director: Imtiaz Ali
Writer: Imtiaz Ali
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone
If a modern romantic film is what you are willing to stream, Tamasha would be my recommendation for multiple reasons. First and foremost, this movie is about real-life ex-flames: Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone.
The film (directed by Imtiaz Ali) is set around Ved Vardhan Sahni (Ranbir) and showcases his life in three different stages: a nine-year-old child, a 19-year-old teenager, and a 30-year-old adult. With A.R Rahman’s soundtrack and Irshad Kamil’s lyrics, Tamasha won’t fail to touch your heart, should you have a penchant for romantic flicks.

37. Article 15 (2019)
IMDb Rating: 8.2/10
Director: Anubhav Sinha
Writer: Anubhav Sinha, Gaurav Solanki
Cast: Ayushmann Khurrana, Nassar, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra
Article 15 is a gem of a movie. It showcases the cast divide that is still plaguing rural India. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the movie stars Ayushman Khurrana in the role of an IPS officer. He is transferred to a rural area, where he fights to bring justice to a strange case of missing girls and breaks the social prejudices in the process.
The movie title is taken from Article 15 of the Indian constitution that abolished any discrimination based on religion, race, caste, sex, place of birth, or any of them. My favourite thing about this movie is that it doesn’t show any heroism. Ayushman Khurrana works with the resources he has and solves the case like a normal police officer. You are going to enjoy this one.

38. Badhai Do (2022)

Director: Harshavardhan Kulkarni
Writer: Suman Adhikary, Akshat Ghildial, Harshavardhan Kulkarni
Cast: Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar, Sheeba Chaddha, Chum Darang
Badhai Do is a spiritual successor to the movie Badhai Ho continuing to shed light on socially uncomfortable topics. Starring Rajkummar Rao(Shardul) and Bhumi Pednekar(Sumi) as a couple in a lavender marriage, this movie talks about gay and lesbian relationship. Everything seems to work fine in their marriage of convenience until Sumi’s girlfriend comes to live with them. The movie openly talks about the hardships the LGBTQ+ community is going through and how our society is yet to understand the seriousness of the issue. Targeting the homophobic contributours of society, both the lead actors have given a fabulous performance motivating those from the community to come out of the closet.

39. Haraamkhor (2015)
IMDb Rating: 6.4/10
Director: Shlok Sharma
Writer: Shlok Sharma
Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Shweta Tripathi
Haraamkhor tells the story of a relationship between a teacher (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and his teenage student (Shweta Tripathi). Shyam (Nawaz) is a school teacher who takes advantage of his student Sandhya’s (Tripathi) circumstances to initiate a relationship.
Sandhya comes from a broken family (his father is a drunk police officer – no mother in the picture), and it’s easy for Shyam to get her interested. The story becomes complex when Sandhya’s classmates discover the relationship. It’s not an exceptional movie, but the performance of both Nawaz and Shweta is great, and you will enjoy the experience.

40. Dev D
IMDb Rating: 8/10
Director: Anurag Kashyap
Writer: Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane
Cast: Abhay Deol, Mahie Gill, Kalki Koechlin
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s masterpiece Devdas (based on a novel with the same name by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay) is a masterpiece that should never get a remake. Its beauty is something intangible that can never be captured. And thankfully, Anurag Kashyap has not tried to do that in his movie Dev D. Instead, he has given his modern take on the novel and created a gem.
Think of it as BBC’s Sherlock. It takes the same old story but places it in the confinement of modern society. Both the story adaptation and the music are phenomenal. You are going to watch this one again and again.

41. Bulbbul (2020)
IMDb Rating: 6.5/10
Director: Anvita Dutt
Writer: Anvita Dutt
Cast: Tripti Dimri, Avinash Tiwary, Paoli Dam, Rahul Bose, Parambrata Chatterjee
Bulbbul, despite its thinly written story and characters, outperforms numerous dim-witted Bollywood movies. The movie is produced by Anushka Sharma and directed by Anvita Dutt. It reimagines the concept of cliche horror stories from Indian folktales and presents a predictable yet mysterious story. A young bride grows up to be an enigmatic woman looking after the ancient Haveli. Meanwhile, the villagers are meeting mysterious supernatural deaths. Because of the weak script, the movie heavily depends on music scores and cinematography to convey the desired feeling, and it works tremendously well. The night sequences with blood-red shade and alluring music scores by composer Amit Trivedi are enough to make this movie a must-watch.
